WHERE IS GOD WHEN IT HURTS
Pains and suffering are phenomena that are common to
everyone. Living on this planet earth is something that can never go away without
pains and afflictions. There are times when you are happy so that you have no
sense of needing Him. If you turn to Him you will be welcomed with a wide open
arms, but when you go to Him at the point your needs are desperate, when all
other helps are gone and seem not working what do you find? A door slammed in
your face, after that silence you may as well turn away and feel as if God
doesn’t exist. So today we will be looking at some terms that will help us
tackle some issues that causes pains in our lives.
(i)
LEARN TO JUDGE THE PRESENT BY THE FUTURE
Remember
Jesus His most intimate encounter with his disciples during the meal, He said;
in this world you will have troubles but take heart for I have overcome the world
(John 16:33).
It
is a good thing to remember when we encounter dark disturbing times, that we
live our days on Easter as the as the Apostle Paul expressed it, “I consider
that our present suffering are not worth comparing with the glory that will be
revealed in us” (Romans 8:18).
It
was no accident, I believe that Jesus spoke His triumphant word I have overcome
the world, even as Roman soldiers were buckling on weapons for His arrest. He
knew how to judge the present by the future.
(ii)
GAIN THE CONFIDENCE THAT GOD TRULY UNDERSTAND YOUR PAIN.
The
presence of suffering does not mean God has forsaken me. Remember the author of
our salvation was made perfect through suffering. Hebrew 2:10. Because of Jesus
God hears our cries.
Whatever
we are going through God Himself has gone through (Hebrew 4:15), we have a high
Priest, who having graduated from school of suffering is able to deal gently with
those who are ignorant and are going astray. Since He Himself is subject to
weakness; (Hebrew 5:2) because of Jesus God truly understands our pains, our
tears becomes His tears we are not abandoned. So you are not suffering alone
God is there with you and also God weep with us so that we can on that day
laugh with him.
(iii)
YOU HAVE TO LEARN A NEW LEVEL OF THE MEANING OF
SUFFERING
Majority of we
Christians seems shocked when suffering comes our way, we expect God to reward
our faithfulness with prosperity and comfort but it is just the opposite in
Christianity. As Peter advised ‘suffering Christians in 1 Peter2:21
‘‘this suffering is all part of you’, Christ who suffered for you is your
example follows in His steps, all these shows that suffering can gain meaning
if we consider it as part of the cross we rake in following Jesus. Although Christ
does not always remove our pains, but He fills them with meaning absorbing them
into His own suffering, which means we are helping to accomplish God’s
redemptive purpose in the world as co-participants with Him in the little to
expel evil from this planet. Suffering in Christ helps us to know that the
casualties we sustain are wounds of honour that will one day be rewarded. Remember
the suffering of Christ on the cross have assured us the final victory but the
battle remains for us to fight. That is why Paul prayed to know Christ and the
power of His resurrection. And the fellowship of sharing in His suffering
embracing both the agony and ecstasy of Christ life on earth (Philippians 3:10).
